When to Update Your Address During a Move
When I find out I'm moving, I always start the address change process as soon as possible.
Often, these companies take a few weeks to bring the new address into effect so the earlier, the better, in my opinion.
Before you move, it's most important to notify the post office and set up forwarding from your old address for your move date.
This will ensure that you'll get mail for 6 months if you miss anything because USPS will forward your mail to the new address.

Who to Notify of an Address Change
There are so many companies to notify when moving that it's important to get every one of them!
For that reason, I've broken down the address change checklist into categories:
- Government Agencies (Most Important)
- Financial Companies
- Utilities
- Subscriptions
- Job/School
- Insurance Companies
- Providers
- Social
- Personal
Let's go through each address change category and discuss exactly who to notify of your new address and how to do it!
1. Government Entities
The first and most important place to change your address is with all of the government agencies.
- Post Office- As I mentioned above, it's important to change your address with the post office as soon as possible since it can take some time to officially change. Here, you should also set up address forwarding so that your mail will be automatically forwarded to your new address. This way, if you forget to change a few things, it will show up with a temporary sticker at your new address which will also serve as a reminder to change your address at that entity.
- IRS- Change your address with the IRS by using form 8822. This way, any tax notifications will be sent to you directly.
- DMV- Make sure to check with your state and follow instructions to change your address with the DMV so that it is corrected with your license. Police can actually give you a ticket if you don't have your current address registered with the DMV so make sure to do that! Address changes with the DMV can usually be done online. Also, make sure they will update your voter registration.
- Vehicle Registration- You'll want to update your address for your vehicles, motorcycles, boats, etc so that you are compliant with your state.
- Social Security- If you receive social security, make sure to get your address updated with them as well!
2. Financial Companies
It's VERY important to notify all of your financial services about your address change. I put this 3rd because the utilities are more important to make sure you have electricity, gas, etc.
However, next on your list should be financial services.
- Banks- Notify all bank accounts of your address change (Chase, Union Banks, High Yield Savings Accounts, etc). If you're a bit unorganized as to what financial services you have, I recommend tracking everything in my financial spreadsheets, Here are some other financial articles that will help with financial organization:
- Credit Card Companies– Make sure to notify all credit card companies, including Retail Credit Cards like Macy's, Nordstrom, TJ Maxx, Amazon, etc.
- Loan Companies– Notify all loan companies about your address change. This includes student loans, business loans, and mortgage loans if the mortgage is not associated with the new address!
- Brokerages– Don't forget to let all of your brokerages and 401k companies know about your address (Fidelity. Vanguard, etc)
3. Utilities
It is very important to change your address on your utilities so that things are paid on time and so that you don't overpay on your previous home/apartment.
I always call my utility companies to let them know of the address change and ask for instructions.
They will typically ask you for your last date at your old address. This way, after that date, you won't be charged for any more utilities.
Then, they will also ask for your move-in date at the new address to make sure you have utilities on your first day.
Some of these utilities can simply move your account to the new address and other ones will need to do an installation at the new address.
Here is a list of the utility companies to notify of your address change.
- Electricity
- Gas
- Water
- Trash
- Internet
- Land Lines
- Cell Phone
4. Subscriptions
Alright, we can't forget our subscriptions either! Think about anything you pay for on a monthly basis.

- HR at Work
- Businesses (Sole Proprietorships, LLCs, etc)
- Side Hustles (eBay, Poshmark, etc)
- School
- Certifications (for your profession)
- Financial Aid
- Daycare
- Club Organizations
6. Insurance Companies
In this category, I left fields blank so you could fill in what is applicable to you.
This is also a very important category as I once had a huge delinquency on my credit (the importance of monitoring your credit) and found out it was because an insurance company had the wrong address so I never paid a bill from them (because I didn't know about it).

7. Social
I like to keep a list of all my friends/family email addresses in my phone so that when I move, I can email everyone my new address. This has been very helpful and is such a time saver!
I'd also recommend collecting all of your friends/family home addresses so that you have those as well when you need them!
- Family
- Friends
8. Personal
This category on the spreadsheet will be for anything I may have forgotten.
Feel free to fill in your own details that apply to your life and family!
For me, the personal section has all of the details for my side business!
